From Feeling Lost to Finding a Home on Ice: My Story
When I first came to Vancouver, the Canucks were more than just a hockey team to me. They were my welcome to this new city. Even though I loved the energy of the fans and the games, I still felt alone. I tried other sports like badminton and soccer, but they didn't make me feel connected.
Then, I started playing hockey at 24. Yes, it was late. Many people here have played since they were kids. At first, every time I let in a goal, I felt like giving up, I felt like I was letting my team down. But my team was there for me. We supported each other, and that made me feel like I belonged.
This is how I found out about the Canucks Autism Network (CAN). I thought, if hockey helped me feel connected, why not for others? With CAN, I saw kids with autism smile and enjoy the game. It was amazing. They felt happy and part of something special, just like I did.
Now, the ice rink symbolizes more than just a game. It's a place where dreams come true. And speaking of dreams, I'm incredibly excited and honored to be attending my 3rd annual CAN Pro-Am tournament. This event isn’t just any game. It brings together rec and corporate teams for an unmatched experience both on and off the ice, especially with the chance to interact with NHL Alumni! It's a dream come true, both for players like me and for those we're aiming to support.
Every donation we receive goes directly to CAN's impactful programs, providing kids on the autism spectrum with invaluable opportunities. My journey from feeling out of place to skating alongside NHL legends is a testament to the power of community and dreams.
My time with hockey has changed my life. From feeling out of place to feeling right at home on the ice, it's been a great ride.
Now, I need your help. If my story touched you, please consider supporting CAN. Every donation, share, or word of encouragement counts. Let's make a difference together.
Together, we can make it happen.
